ABTA have partnered with Travelife, The Travel Association and The Travel Foundation to launch the Make Holidays Greener campaign to raise awareness about the importance of cleaner, greener beaches and how to reduce plastic waste. This year’s campaign will launch on 1 July and we will be supporting the campaign by encouraging holidaymakers to make sustainable holiday pledges, taking care of the local environment and supporting local communities in holiday destinations.

It is estimated that about 6.4 million tonnes of plastic washes into our oceans each year and the total will increase ten-fold by 2020. From cigarette ends and shopping bags, to crisp packets and bottles, the waste is not only unsightly but causes serious damage to marine wildlife.

Travelife and The Travel Foundation are dedicated to making holidays more sustainable by working with travel businesses around the world to help them improve their social, economic and environmental impacts.  Whether this means cutting waste and energy consumption, developing a sustainability strategy, or looking at hotel and excursion impacts in destinations.

Travelife run a certification programme where hotels and accommodations must undertake an independent on-site audit to prove they meet Travelife’s strict criteria before they receive a Travelife certification. If they can prove they meet the Travelife sustainability criteria, successful hotels and accommodations will achieve Travelife Gold certification based on the Travelife Standard, which has been officially approved by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council.
